Why this route produces empty legs

Van Nuys sits in the San Fernando Valley and handles more of the Los Angeles private traffic than any other field, and Las Vegas is 200 nautical miles east of it. Of the 40 legs we recorded touching Van Nuys, 21 involved Las Vegas. The next busiest partners, Oakland and San Francisco, had four each.

This is the quieter half of the busiest pair on our whole board. Thirteen legs ran Las Vegas to Van Nuys against eight coming back this way, because more paid flights land in Las Vegas than leave it, so more aircraft go home to the Valley empty than come out to Nevada empty.

Both directions, up to 20 flights, with the price exactly as the operator published it.

When they show up

Constantly and with very little warning. Three legs, all on a Learjet 60XR, departed on consecutive days in the middle of August, and seven of the eight had already flown by the time this page was built.

The airports on this route

On a flight this short the drive at each end is the longer half of the journey. Van Nuys is quick for the Valley and the west side of Los Angeles and slow for anywhere south of downtown, and at the Las Vegas end these listings name the city rather than the field, so ask which one before you book a car.

This is a record, not availability. These are the legs we saw on this corridor in that window, kept so the route has a history you can judge it by. None of them is bookable from this table. What is actually open right now is the live list above, and if it is empty the route alert is the way to catch the next one.

Before you book

The price on a card is the operator's figure for the whole aircraft. What that comes to per seat, across every type we see, is in how much an empty leg private jet costs.

No operator on this corridor publishes a price. Every leg says price on request, and none of them publishes a seat count either, so the two things you would most want to compare are both missing from the listings and have to come from the operator.

The cabins are not small. Three of the eight legs were Gulfstream G600s and one was a G450, long range aircraft flying a 200 nautical mile hop because that is where they happened to be, not because the route calls for them.

Ask the operator three things: whether the departure time can still move, what happens if the paid flight that created this empty leg falls through, and which Los Angeles field you are actually leaving from.
