Why this route produces empty legs

Van Nuys is one of the largest departure fields on our board and this is a mid sized corner of it. Seventy three recorded departures leave Van Nuys for 32 different destinations, led by Las Vegas on ten, Teterboro on nine and San Francisco on seven. Oakland takes five, level with Salt Lake City.

From Oakland's side it is the single largest source. Oakland has fourteen recorded arrivals from nine origins and Van Nuys supplies five of them, more than double the next, which is Las Vegas on two. Every other origin has one. Southern California is most of what arrives here.

One aircraft type does four fifths of it, and not from one operator. Four of the five legs are a Cessna Citation CJ3, two listed by Call a Jet on consecutive days in August and two by Silver Air on consecutive days in September. The fifth is a Bombardier Lear 40XR from XCEL JET. Three operators, two cabin sizes, seven seats and six.

Two of those three treat Van Nuys as home. 52 of Silver Air's 67 listings anywhere in our record have Van Nuys at one end, and 18 of XCEL JET's 31. Call a Jet is the opposite, eight of 214, which is why its two legs here read as a pair of one offs rather than part of a pattern.

Both directions, up to 20 flights, with the price exactly as the operator published it.

When they show up

In two clusters six weeks apart. The two Call a Jet legs went on 3 and 4 August 2026, back to back, and the other three fall on 14, 15 and 19 September. Nothing sits between them.

Notice is short and it is consistent, which is unusual on our board. Measured from the day each listing entered our record to its departure, the five gave 2, 3, 4, 11 and 13 days. Nothing on this corridor has ever been listed more than a fortnight ahead.

The airports on this route

Three of the five listings name Van Nuys and Metropolitan Oakland International by ICAO code. The other two, both from Call a Jet, write Van Nuys and Oakland with no code at all, which is true of every one of that operator's 214 listings from end to end. Our record pairs the name Oakland with KOAK and with no other field, which is why those two are counted here, but confirm the exact field with the operator before you plan the drive.

This is a record, not availability. These are the legs we have recorded on this corridor, read when you opened this page, kept so the route has a history you can judge it by. None of them is bookable from this table. What is actually open right now is the live list above, and if it is empty the route alert is the way to catch the next one.

Van Nuys to Oakland in the record

Every leg we have recorded between Van Nuys and Oakland, in either direction, since 30 July 2026, whether it is still on the board or not. A leg leaves the board when the operator stops publishing it, and we cannot tell from outside whether it was sold or withdrawn, so these are counts of what was listed, not of what flew.

Legs by departure month

One bar per calendar month, from the first month in our record to the furthest date an operator has published so far. Grey bars are months already past, gold is this month and the months ahead. A blank month is a month we have no record for, and before August 2026 that means we were not yet recording. The months ahead hold only what operators have published up to now, and most empty legs appear days or weeks before departure, so those bars will keep growing. The shape says how far ahead operators publish, not how busy a month will be.

Each row is a pair of airports as the operator named them, in the direction flown. Both directions of the corridor are counted. An operator that names only the city leaves us the city, which is why some rows are city names.

Before you book

The price on a card is the operator's figure for the whole aircraft. What that comes to per seat, across every type we see, is in how much an empty leg private jet costs.

No leg on this corridor carries a published price. All five say price on request, so the figure comes from the operator when you ask and we show nothing rather than guess.

That is the operators rather than a gap in our collection, and it is true of all three of them. Call a Jet publishes no price on any of its 214 listings in our record, Silver Air none on any of its 67 and XCEL JET none on any of its 31. Between them that is 312 listings and not one figure.

Seats and block times behave the other way round. Every one of the five publishes a seat count, seven on the four Citation CJ3 legs and six on the Lear 40XR. Three of the five publish a block time and all three say 1 hour 6 minutes. The two that do not are the Call a Jet legs, and that operator publishes no block time anywhere either.

We have recorded three legs coming back from Oakland to Van Nuys, below our bar for a page of its own, so there is no reverse page yet. Ask the operator three things: whether the departure time can still move, what happens if the paid flight that created this empty leg falls through, and which Bay Area field you are actually landing at.
